Description
Manal Al-Sharif grew up in Mecca as the daughter of a taxi driver, subjected to regular physical and mental punishment. As a teenager, she was a religious fanatic: she lived a puritanical life, in line with social expectations, she revealed her sister’s secret conversations with an unknown man, and she burned her brother’s pop music cassettes in the oven, because they are considered forbidden in Saudi culture. Her mother fought resolutely for her daughter to be able to study, and as a result, Manal’s values gradually changed. By her twenties, she was already working as an information security expert, and she was disadvantaged daily because of her female status: she could not rent an apartment without a male guardian, she was often branded as a weak-willed woman, and although she had her own car, she could not drive. Manal started a movement called Women2Drive so that women could also drive freely and thus gain independence. She was imprisoned for her courageous act, but her initiative still achieved significant results. Dare to Drive! An intimate account of a women's rights activist, it offers insight into the humiliating daily lives of Saudi women and the struggles we face when we dare to take control of our own destiny. "Rain begins with a single drop." The motto of the Women2Drive movement
