The volume, as well as the television program series Szabadság tér '56, which serves as their basis, marked the relentlessly honest exploration of one of our most common pasts, one of the most dramatic chapters of twentieth-century Hungarian history. And at the same time, the honor of the known and unknown heroes, as well as those of our compatriots, who, despite decades of ordeal and suffering, and who set an example for all of us, were earned.
